Teachers Health Group announces below-industry premium increase of 3.94%
3 March 2026
Tuesday 3 March 2026: Teachers Health Group (THG) has announced an annual average premium increase of 3.94% across its brands — Teachers Health, Nurses & Midwives Health, UniHealth, TUH and Union Health — significantly below the industry average of 4.41%.
The fund’s increase is also lower than many major health funds, including NIB (5.47%), Medibank Private (5.10%), HCF (4.96%) and Bupa (4.80%).
With cost-of-living pressures continuing to affect households, THG has prioritised keeping premiums as low as possible while enhancing value for members.
Putting members first
Teachers Health Group CEO Brad Joyce said as well as comparing cost of premiums, Australians should understand what is being returned to them in benefits, as well as real wellbeing value and support.
“There are a multitude of ways in which health funds can help look after the communities they care for and ease the cost-of-living pressure on household budgets, above and beyond keeping premiums as low as possible. Specific benefits and programs that are meaningful and designed with member needs in mind will make your dollar work harder.
“As a not-for-profit, our focus is always on member health and wellbeing, not payouts to shareholders. In 2025, we returned 90c of every premium dollar in claims — well above the industry average of 85c.
“We know our members want more value from their private health cover, especially at a time when every dollar needs to go further. This year’s below-average premium rise — combined with improvements to our Extras cover — means better benefits and more value where it counts for our members”.
Even more value on Extras cover
THG has enhanced Extras cover to deliver greater value and more ways to stay healthy.
From 1 April 2026, members can claim on the following across all levels of Extras cover:
- Shiatsu
- Naturopathy
- Western Herbal Medicine
- Alexander Technique
- Top Extras will now include a new $140 benefit for pelvic floor and incontinence support products and devices.
- Members are now able to claim for Pilates and yoga under our Healthy Lifestyle program (since 1 January 2026).
Helping members get more from their cover
THG’s goal is for every member to feel they’re getting the most out of their health cover:
- Know your cover: Understand what you’re covered for helps you make the most of everything available to you.
- Use your Extras: Check which Extras are included in your cover and use them to support your everyday health and wellbeing.
- Explore health support services: From Chronic Disease Management to Hospital Substitute Treatment Programs – there are more ways to access care than you might think.
- Tap into women’s health expertise: You may be eligible for support across nutrition, pregnancy, pelvic floor devices and more.
- Understand mental health support: THG provides a range of mental health benefits and support services designed to help you stay emotionally and physically well.
- Prioritise preventative health: by having regular dental and eye check-ups.
- Make the most of Member Rewards: You can offset the cost of cover simply by shopping with participating retailers. Last year, our members collectively received more than $50,000 in cashback.
