Can I claim for contraceptive medication via Extras cover?

Only if it’s been prescribed to treat a medical condition (i.e. not used as a contraceptive). And it meets the general criteria for a Pharmaceutical claim.

That’s because Extras policies (under the Private Health Insurance Act) can only provide benefits for products and services intended to manage or prevent a disease, injury or condition – which isn’t the case if taken as a form of contraceptive.

To pay your claim, we’ll need a letter from your doctor confirming the medication is part of your treatment, and they’ll need to reconfirm this each year you claim for it.
