What happens if I get taken to hospital in an emergency?
In an emergency, you’ll be taken by ambulance to the nearest accident and emergency department of a public hospital. If this happens, you’re entitled to be treated as a public patient at no charge, by a doctor appointed by the hospital.
If you have Teachers Health Hospital, Extras or Emergency Ambulance insurance, you’re covered for an emergency ambulance provided by a State Government Service (including state government air ambulance). If you’re a resident in Queensland or Tasmania, your emergency ambulance fees may be covered by the state government.
If you’re taken to accident and emergency at a private hospital, you’ll be charged as an outpatient and won’t be able to claim under your Hospital cover.
